Having the right mindset while writing

In order to be an effective writer you want to have the right mindset. If you go into your writing session with negative or faulty beliefs, your writing will show that, that is if you even are able to get any writing done. Many people assume that writing is supposed to come natural and that if it does not there is something wrong with you. The truth is to become a better writer you have to write and the desire to write grows the more you write. When I first began writing, I had no clue what I was doing. Some sessions I felt inspired others I felt stupid. I was convinced that becoming an author was not for me. Now almost 8 books later I am grateful that I pushed past those feelings and kept writing regardless. I learned that there was no power in waiting to write, but just going for it. I read a quote on Instagram and wanted to share as this explains more of the reason why you should not be waiting for inspiration. The quote says “If you are waiting for inspiration to write you are a waiter NOT a writer….” If you spend your whole life waiting, you just might miss your chance to get your book written. Here are 5 strategies to get in the right mindset so that you can become more effective while writing.

  1. Create a vision board- Have the vision board spell out the vision for your life as a blogger or author. What do you have? What feelings do you feel? What did you accomplish? How did your life change? Put all of this on the board. When you are feeling like throwing in the towel, you can look at your vision board and feel inspired to keep writing because now you remember what the purpose and outcome will be.
  2. Make writing a priority. We all have life happen to us from time to time. We have families and jobs that often get in the way of our goals. When we decide to put ourselves and our goals on the backburner, our life will reflect this. Today pencil in on your calendar your writing time. Make sure you treat that appointment as you would treat a doctor’s appointment or work meeting. Meaning that the time cannot be changed or altered it is non-negotiable!
  3. Step back and give yourself advice. Pretend that a good friend or child (or someone you love dearly) told you that becoming a blogger or author was there big goal. What would you tell them? How would you encourage them? Write down all of the things you would say to them and them and then say it aloud to help encourage yourself. I often like to write statements out like affirmations so they I am speaking to my subconscious mind and helping to inform the steps I would like to take.
  4. Set the tone for what you would like to accomplish. When you go into your writing session, understand that you are not superwoman and you cannot do it all. Also, understand that it is a waste of time to scroll through the internet during your writing time. Instead, reasonably identify what you want accomplished during that time (i.e. I will write one blog post, I will write 1,000 words, I will finish the conclusion for this short story etc.) This will give you a blueprint to follow as you are going to get started.
  5. Identify your Why. When you set a goal there should always be a strong “why” behind it. Why is this goal important? Why are you setting this goal now? Why do you need to accomplish it. Keep this why in the forefront of your mind during your writing session to help encourage you to keep going. For me I wrote a book because I wanted to leave a legacy for my daughters and to help women all around the world conquer their chaos and reach their goals. Whenever I felt like giving up with my goals I decided I was going to remember why I HAD to accomplish them and this always gave me the momentum I needed to press forward.

I applaud you for the step you have taken to work on your writing. It is impressive to see you working towards a dream. While working towards your dream in the beginning can, feel really excited eventually the excitement wanes down and you can become overwhelmed and frustrated. Use these strategies to help get your mind in the right place so that you can in turn be an effective writer. If you're ready to get started writing sign up here for my FREE write your chapters class: https://nicolyawilliams.com/write-your-chapters/
