Having evergreen content

When narrowing down your course topic you will want to create evergreen content. Evergreen content is content that retains relevance, it's not time sensitive and continues to keep people engaged long after the course is launched. Some people think that all online content is evergreen, because it doesn't come down after it's posted, but true evergreen content is different. It continues to be relevant and needed forever.Ways to Make Your Course Evergreen

  • Answer frequently asked questions and concerns from your learners
  • Provide industry tips, "how to" explanations or advice
  • How to tips and steps
  • Think of a topic that will always apply (i.e. parenting, budgeting etc. avoid fads like how to use snapchat for your business)

Make a list of evergreen topics you're interested in, and then do research to pick the best ideas. Research the keywords and also competitors to confirm if this content is marketable and enticing.

Evergreen keywords

Coming up with a good title for your course can change everything. Your course title should be optimized for SEO (meaning people who use search engines can find it) and include important keywords. Here are great and searchable keywords that you can consider if you want to include in your title:

  • Why
  • When
  • What
  • How
  • Where
  • Who
  • Tips
  • Guide
  • Tutorial
  • List

You must create content that gives value to your learners. The challenging part of evergreen content is that  there may be a million other courses on the same topic but this is confirmation that you idea is validated. You can still implement your idea, but I suggest adding your own unique spin on the topic. For example if you see a lot of budgeting courses for divorced moms and a lot of business courses being offered, you could be creative and make a course for divorced women who want to start a business on a budget. start using your creativity to think outside the box.

So what is NOT evergreen content?

To better clarify what things you want to avoid:

  • News articles
  • Statistics or reports that will quickly go out of date
  • Articles focused on pop culture or a current trend
  • Current fashion trends
  • Things that will likely not be relevant in 10 years

Now you will note that I have some time sensitive info in this course (i.e. industry specific stats), but these are constantly updated to maintain my relevancy to my learners. Evergreen content is great in fact I think it should be the majority of your course, but don’t think that everything you create needs to be (or should be) evergreen.
