Strategic Goal Setting For The New Year
With the new year being right around the corner it so important that we not only set goals but we start taking action as a relates to them. And not just any action but intentional action in order to increase your overall success. In today’s blog, I’m going to share a simple strategy that you can dive right into, in order to begin to bridge the gap from where you are and where you wanna be.
Before going after your goals the first thing you need to do is get clarity around what you desire to feel AND what you desire to accomplish. Clarity helps you to remove confusion and hone in on exactly what it is you want. This also helps you to be more intentional about creating steps that will help you create what you desire.
After that I challenge you to determine a phrase or word you can hold to during the year. I read a book called One Word a few years ago and this book inspired be to pick a word every year. The purpose is to choose a theme that will help to inspire you to take action all year long. If you can’t pick one think about how you want to feel throughout the year. This word will keep you grounded and motivated to continue to show up for your goals day after day/ For me my word for the upcoming year is "growth:, and to me it means I want to grow and also help my audience to do the same. After you determine your word I want you to then consider how you can embody this phrase and word! If you're unsure how to go on the embodiment journey you can learn more on my recent blog post here or check out my vlog post here!
Now I am going to challenge you to pick 2 big PUSH goals (they push you, but also don’t feel too far out of reach). The best way to narrow it down is to think of what goal would make you feel the most proud of yourself . List these goals out and say them out loud too see how it feels in your body. If you're feeling nervous and excited that usually means you're on the right track.
Now thinking of these PUSH goals I want you to identify your-would be nice list. I like to think of this as supplementary list. Meaning it will supplement the goals you’re working on. For example good self care, like getting 8 hours of sleep as a non-negotiable is a great supplementary focus no matter what goal you're working on.
Afterwards identify the actions that align with those goals. The best thing you can do is streamline the process by considering which steps equate to success for you overall. Then consider; How can you dedicate time to these?
Here are some great reflective questions to get you thinking:
What do I need to be successful?
What could potentially get in my way?
How can I avoid or prepare for these obstacles ?
What does my audience struggle with?
What do they always ask about?
What is something that is engaging for my audience? How can I do more of this?
What’s missing for my audience? How can I add more of this?
So now that you have your goals and some strategies it's time to begin to organize your approach. It’s easy to become overwhelmed trying to accomplish your BIG goals. Just like the old saying goes you eat an elephant one bite at a time so you take your goals one step at a time. For this I recommend breaking your goals into the quarters of the year. For example if you want to her $100k that would equate to $25k/quarter. This prevents you from being overwhelmed. How can you organize your goal so that you're more excited and less overwhelmed?
After you have laid the ground work the next step is to actually take action. What good is it if you identify what needs to be done, how you wanna feel and what outcome you're seeking if you’re not actually taking action. I could give you systems and strategies all day but it must be paired with implementation if you actually want to take the desire and bring it to fruition.
Lastly, my favorite step is to reward yourself- The biggest mistake people make is they believe that they can’t reward themselves for their progress until they’ve already completed it. This quickly causes people to lose motivation which then equates to them not reaching their goal. So what I always recommend for my clients is to create small benchmarks that you can celebrate. For example if you have a quarterly goal of earning 25k how can you celebrate every 5k worth of earning? The celebration doesn’t have to be anything big can literally be that you celebrate by giving yourself permission to watch a marathon of your favorite TV show, or going to grab a bite to eat with someone you love, or simply painting your nails for a little extra self care. The point is make sure you take time to celebrate your success in order to keep your motivation and momentum going.
