How clutter kills your productivity

Have you ever been in a rush somewhere and wondering all over looking for your car keys? Last week my daughter had that experience. We were on our way to my mothers house and she spent literally 15 minutes looking for her tablet. By sorting out the clutter in your life, you’ll free up your time, reduce stress, and make it easier to move through your days.

Searching for Lost Items

If your house is organized and everything has its place and it’s easy to find the things that you need. On the flip side when you’re throwing things down randomly it can be a daily struggle to find what you need. After sometime this can be frustrating, but the problem is most of us have made it a habit to behave this way.

Take the first step: Create a dedicated space for your most frequently misplaced items, whether it’s your phone, keys, wallet, or something else. Once you realize how smooth your mornings go you will wonder how you didn’t begin earlier.

Making Decisions Again, and Again, and Again

Do you often get overwhelmed with all the clutter. Then when it’s time to organize it you have no clue where to begin?. It can be difficult to decide what to do with your clutter, but you can’t make any progress until you start having a system in place.

Take the first step: You don’t have to deal with all your clutter at once. Instead, start small. I have a 2-minute rule. Where if something can be put away in under two minutes I do that. For example, if I get two pieces of mail- an electric bill and my retirement statement I pay the electric bill right away and my retirement statement I file away. Once I started doing this it reduced the overwhelm I felt with trying to sort tons of mail at once.

Clutter Breeds Stress

Research says that in our mind is a reflection of our space. Therefore if your physical space is messy that will highly influence your emotional state. Think about it….have you ever cleaned and then all the sudden you feel super productive or super focused. This is not coincidental. This is science!Studies show that people in cluttered homes have higher stress levels than those who say their house is tidy. High levels of stress waste your time by preventing you from resting and relaxing. All of which is no good!

Take the first step: Start with where you work the most. Find some ways you can tidy this space up and watch your productivity begin to soar. After you get a handle on that space consider adding additional spaces around your home.
