How to create a writing space

When it comes to writing a book one of the most important aspects is to have an environment that is conducive to your writing success.

While many people are tempted to download apps, it’s not a bad idea, but today I want to share some strategies you can use to create the best writing environment
In order to create a routine and flow out of your writing one of the best things you can do is write on a consistent schedule and write at a consistent location. The main thought to avoid is considering yourself a writer only under perfect/ certain circumstances. You just learn to love your creativity and understand it exists in many ways and places. Creating a writing space allows you to really highlight that you can be a writer all the time .
Now when you close your eyes and consider your “perfect” Writing location what comes to mind? It’s important to know what works and what doesn’t. Today I will share the steps to create a working space that improves your success.
  1. Determine where you’re going to be most successful writing at (home, coffee shop etc)- understand you’re not married to this place but overall this is where you will write for most of the time. If there is a place where you often gravitate consider this space.
  2. Create a space that makes it easy to write. Make sure the place is convenient because it’s it’s constantly out of reach or difficult to get to you can begin to make excuses not to go.
  3. Remove distractions. We all have distractions, but the best thing you can do is consider which ones exist and determine how to avoid and prevent them.
  4. Consider what you need ahead of time. It is tempting to get up and grab things or go to the bathroom. If you plan ahead of time you can be sure to maximize your writing time. For example I always take a glass of water and my idea journal with me so I am not fidgeting around looking for what I need and in turn becoming more distracted.
  5. Make it comfy, the last thing you want to do is sit on the floor or some painful chair while writing. Writing is a long term commitment you deserve to be comfortable during this time.
  6. Commit to using this place. I used affirmations to reinforce what I am working at. I have my clients print their contracts and review them every single day.
  7. Declutter and review this space regularly. Research says that our immediate environment is a reflection of our internal thoughts. If your writing space is cluttered or unorganized your mind will also be the same and you will likely deal with distractions. Sometimes the process of writing can get distracting so it’s important to declutter regularly to avoid turning your safe and motivational space to a cluttered mess. Also take time to review if the space is continuing to work for you by considering how productive you’re when you do your writing there.
If you noticed none of these steps broke the bank. You can write on a budget and also create your sacred space on a budget. The writer’s workspace is a sacred environment where you need to avoid distractions and you should be able to explore your creativity freely.
